Boozman Signs Letter to President in Support of Immigration Enforcement Program
The initiative effectively multiplies the forces of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through enhanced cooperation and communication with state and local law enforcement. Under 287(g), ICE provides state and local law enforcement with training and subsequent authorization to identify, process, and when appropriate, detain immigration offenders they encounter during their regular, daily law-enforcement activity. Thanks to the efforts of Rogers Mayor Steve Womack, a driving force behind the Northwest Arkansas Task Force, 19 officers and deputies graduated from 287(g) training two years ago and now work under the supervision of ICE officials and they have made a significant impact. Because of their efforts more than 1500 illegal aliens have been arrested and have or are in the process of deportation.
The effectiveness of the regional task force comprised of the Benton and Washington County Sheriff’s Departments and Rogers and Springdale Police Departments has caught the attention of other communities and agencies in Arkansas that are interested in participating as well. Throughout the country 12 more law enforcement agencies seeking to join the 287(g) program have been approved and are awaiting final action. 21 have been requested and are pending a decision.
287(g) is a program that has a proven track record of success all around the country. According to ICE statistics since January of 2007, the program is credited with identifying more than 100,000 potentially removable aliens – mostly at local jails.
Because of the accomplishments we have achieved in the past two years, I believe 287(g) is a program that must continue and that is why I signed onto a letter to President Obama supporting the 287(g) program.
My record shows how dedicated I am to funding 287(g). I voted against the FY08 Department of Homeland Security Authorization bill because the 287(g) program was not included in the legislation and I have cosponsored legislation that supports this program.
287(g) is a commonsense program that works to enforce our immigration laws and strengthen our borders and I will continue to work to provide additional resources to local law enforcement and federal border and immigration officers. Learn more about 287(g)
