Washington, Feb 6, 2008 - U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today issued the following statement on the deadly storms which hit Arkansas Tuesday, including the Pope County town of Atkins:

“The thoughts and prayers of all Arkansans are with those who lost loved ones in last night’s storms, and I am very proud of the people of Arkansas who have already moved to help their neighbors in this time of need.

I have sent my staff to Pope County to provide immediate assistance to state and local emergency management officials, and to report directly to me on the status in Atkins. Additionally, I have sent staff to Baxter County to join forces with Rep. Berry’s office to help our neighbors in Gassville.

I wish to praise the immediate efforts of Gov. Beebe, as well as the county judges, who have activated their emergency management plans. I am pleased to hear of the President’s promise of assistance, and I will work with the Governor, and local leaders to identify and secure the needed federal assets to assist in our recovery.

Tuesday’s storms have brought out the best in our people. I look forward joining the Arkansas delegation in working with FEMA to provide the best response to assist those in need.”
